Club Representatives attend Mental Heath Seminar

The WSP Club Development Seminar Series continued on Monday 10th October with the Minding Your Mental Health Club Support Seminar at WIT Sports Arena. The Seminar coincided with World Mental Health Day, thirty eight people from sixteen clubs representing thirteen sports/organisations attended.

The Seminar focussed on how clubs can assist club members with positive mental health at all times. Tracy Nugent from the HSE delivered a practical insight in to the #littlethings campaign and how these nine steps can positively impact club member’s mental health on a day to day basis.

Dan Shanahan spoke at length about how as a player and coach, his teams created a strong team ethos and togetherness giving practical examples of how players and coaches can interact to ensure mental health is not negatively impacted.

Aoife Lane, head of Health, Sport and Exercise Science in WIT and a member of the National committee for the GAA Health and Well Being used her expertise and knowledge to showcase activities GAA clubs have used in the past to create a greater community spirit for club members. This was based on the excellent GAA document ‘Play in my Boots'.

Finally, Derek Lyons from Dungarvan GAA and Dave O’Connor from Waterford City Rugby Club explained how their clubs dealt with the tragic loss of playing members giving hints and tips for clubs on how to mind all club members and players in the aftermath of tragic circumstances.

Course participant Ben Duggan from Waterford City RFC said A great seminar that was thought provoking making sure mental health is just as important as players health’ with  Tom Ryan from Dungarvan Rugby Club saying ‘the seminar was excellent, interesting and very informative, the speakers and topics discussed were first class. Thank you.’

The third seminar of the series, Simple video Analysis’ will be delivered by Michael; Hanlon from WIT on Monday 14th November in Room F07, WIT from 6.30 to 8.30pm.

This seminar will focus on how coaches can effectively use low cost and time efficient video analysis to improve the performance of their athletes/teams.
