Fifty take part in first Spring Series Walk

The first walk in the 2013 Walk Waterford – Spring Series organised by Waterford Sports Partnership took place on Saturday last in Dungarvan. We were delighted with the great turnout, over fifty people met on Saturday to enjoy the Dungarvan Railway walk.
This walk is unique to Waterford, it has been developed on the old Railway track (hence the name!). It is mostly off road and predominately flat making it perfect for all levels and abilities. It is well used by locals and visitors on foot and by bike. The full trail is 12km, for Saturdays walk we completed nearly 4km making it perfect route for those looking for a leisurely stroll.  If you would like to experience the Dungarvan Railway walk for yourself there are many access points however the easiest is to park in the Dungarvan Town public car park just off the Shandon roundabout (The Park Hotel) and follow the footbridge going over the river.

A special mention and a big thank you must go to our volunteers Mike and Noeleen who assisted Waterford Sports Partnership (WSP) with the walk.  If you would like to assist WSP with hosting a walk we would be delighted to hear from you. Walk Waterford is designed to give Waterford people the opportunity to experience some of the many fantastic walks Waterford has to offer.  This free programme incorporates a series of five walks across the County. It is aimed at those looking for a leisurely stroll on easy terrain. Everyone is welcome!

The next walk is the Wood Walk in Dunmore East, this coming Saturday 2nd February. The meeting point is in the park opposite the Haven Hotel, Dunmore East 10.45am. This is an easy 3km walk which goes through tranquil woods and the picturesque village with spectacular sea views. Please note there is one steep section in the woods early on in the walk, also the section through the woods may be muddy underfoot due to the current conditions please come prepared.  An added feature of this scheduled walk is the launch of Waterford County Council’s Walk Waterford brochure which features twenty of Waterford’s top walks, of which the Wood Walk is one. Ray McGrath, a local expert, will be on hand to offer snippets of interesting information along the way.

Walkers need only flat walking shoes; runners are ideal, warm clothing and a waterproof jacket. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  For more information contact Waterford Sports Partnership’s Jane O’Dwyer 086 1985729.  We hope to see you there.
