Week One of the Youth Walkers Pedometer Challenge 2013 kicked of last week with forty- three young people across five youth groups taking part in the four week step counting challenge run by Waterford Sports Partnership and funded by Waterford Leader Partnership.

Waterford Sports Partnership and Go Dungarvan Smarter Travel recently delivered a cycle intervention for fifty three students at Colaiste Chathail Naofa including training for twenty six Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) students who are now qualified ‘Sprocket Rocket’ cycle tutors.

Walk Waterford Autumn Series Next Walk Tramore Dunes

It was a wet and windy Sunday for the third walk in the Walk Waterford Autumn Series.  However this did not deter the twenty keen leisure walkers who took part in the Ballysaggart Towers Walk in Lismore. This walk exceeded all expectations with some participants describing the walk as “magical, taking us into another world”, as we explored The Towers and Lodge Gates.

What clubs and volunteers need to know and do now! In 2013, new legislation regarding Garda Vetting will come into force (National Vetting Bureau Act 2012). Anyone who has on-going regular contact with children, in the field of leisure or sport (paid or voluntary), other than those who assist occasionally or in the event of a family or personal relationship, must be vetted.

South Tipperary Sports Partnership is delighted to host, in partnership with South Tipperary County Council, this exciting conference on developing the socio-economic potential of waterway corridors.

Active Body Active Mind Up & Running

The Active Body Active Mind programme for female social welfare recipients got under way this week with thirteen women taking part. This eight week programme is being run by Waterford Sports Partnership and Dunhill Education with the aim of improving  lifestyle management and professional skills and increasing physical activity through local sports taster sessions.

Bike for Life Programme a great success!!

Waterford Sports Partnership has just finished running an exciting new programme called “Bike for Life. This new programme was developed by Cycling Ireland and funded by Get Ireland Active, Health Service Executive (HSE) and Women in Sport. The Bike for Life programme ran for eight weeks with 44 women signing up to the programme in Waterford City and County.

Parkour Training for young people in Waterford

Waterford Sports Partnership is delighted to be able to offer a Parkour Training Course for young people in Waterford City.

Go For Life Grant Scheme open for applications!

The Go for Life Small Grant Scheme is now open. The scheme is aimed at encouraging older participants and is used by groups to buy equipment, run sports events or try new activities. Applications have already begun to arrive from groups and clubs that cater to older people across Ireland.

Waterford Street Soccer League

The 2013 Street Soccer League, a Waterford Sports Partnership & F.A.I. initiative, ran for five weeks on Tuesdays from 6.30-8.30pm from 2nd to 30th July at Williamstown All Weather Pitches. Teams from Avondale, Ballybeg, Crystal Court, Birchwood, The Grange, Farronshoneen, Gracedieu and Fairfield Park took part in glorious sunny weather.

On Sunday 23rd June from 2-4pm, The People's Park in Waterford City will come alive with high-flying BMX action. Bike Week and Waterford Sports Partnership present ‘Jam in the Park’, an event being held as part of national Bike Week.

Sean Kelly Tour Youth Challenge on the road!

The Sean Kelly Tour Youth Challenge kicked off last Tuesday night with twenty-five young people attending the first training spin, which met at the Friary in Dungarvan at 6:30pm. The group will attend six of these training spins leading up to the goal of completing the 50km Kelly Cruise on August 25th.

WSP Staff take part in the Sports Council Challenge

Throughout the month of May, Waterford Sports Partnership took part in the Sports Council Challenge. The challenge is an Irish Sports Council initiative that aims to encourage workplaces to increase their physical activity over four weeks and work towards becoming a healthier workforce.

The 2013 Go for Life Games will take place on Saturday 8th June in Dublin City University. Fourteen counties (12 per team) will participate in three Go for Life adapted versions of Bocce (Lobbers), Pitching (Flisk) and Skittles (Scidils).

Powerchair Football - Come & Try it Sessions

Waterford Sports Partnership and the Association of Irish Powerchair Football (AIPF) held a Come and Try It session in the Kingfisher Club in Waterford on Saturday 20th of April 2013. Among the eight participants that attended, there was a mix of newcomers to the sport and individuals that had played before.

Parent/Child Archery Programme

Waterford Sports Partnership and Na Laoch Dall Archery Club recently hosted a five week Parent/Child Archery Programme. Under the guidance of fully qualified and experienced coaches, the participants were given an introduction into safety on the range, description of equipment and it's components, techniques on drawing and shooting the bow, shooting form and mental aspects of shooting.

Men Only Active Older People Programme

Waterford Sports partnership is currently running an over 55 men only Active Older People Programme in conjunction with the Kingfisher Club. The Programme which is in its third week has been a great success so far and we are sure that the final three weeks will be just as successful.

BIKE WEEK 2013 - Funding available for community cycling themed events!

Waterford County Council and Go Dungarvan are currently inviting applications from Community Groups (see below) for funding to assist with the organisation of cycling themed events during Bike Week 2013 which will take place from 15th to 23rd June.

Olympic Boxing Coach Trains Waterford Students

Head coach of the Irish Amateur Boxing High Performance Unit, Billy Walsh, paid a visit to St. Paul's Community College to share highlights of his career as both a former Boxer and Head Coach of the current Irish Senior National Team. Boxing is now an extracurricular activity in the school, following the success of two Boxing programmes implemented by Waterford Sports
