Winter Walking Challenge - Update - Week 2

The Winter Walking Challenge groups have now completed their second week of the programme and are walking their way through the third!  Reports coming back from the group co-ordinators are really positive. The step counters are proving to be a great motivational tool, group members are finding that at the end of the day they often go for another short walk to improve on the previos days steps, that's the right attitude keep it up!

Winter Walking Challenge

Waterford Sports Partnership is currently running a Winter Walking Challenge programme which has been embraced by over sixty Waterford people. Over the next four weeks the twelve groups will be stepping it out every day, no matter what the weather, counting their steps (with the help of a step counter) and monitoring their progress. Their mission is to increase their number of steps every week.

Games for Understanding - Coaching Seminar

Waterford Sports Partnership is hosting the third and final coaching seminar on Monday November 26th focusing on Games for Understanding.  This seminar will cover how coaches can get the most out of a game situation. This session will specifically look at adapting generic games to develop decision makers.
There will also be a number of practical games that can be used in any coaching session on the night.

Warm Ups/Cool Downs/Stretching Coaching Seminar

Waterford Sports Partnership is hosting the second of three seminars on Monday November 12th focusing on Warm Ups, Cool Downs and Stretching. This seminar will cover demonstrations from coaches on effective activities for warm ups, cool downs and incorporating dynamic and static stretching and will also cover core stability exercises for athlete injury prevention.

Personal Coaching Skills Seminar

Waterford Sports Partnership hosted the first of three Coaching Seminars in the Kingfisher Club, Waterford on Monday 22nd October. The first seminar Personal Coaching Skills was tutored by Peter Jones (Waterford Sports Partnership), Declan O'Leary (Coaching Ireland) and John O'Neill (Munster Rugby Development Officer). Coaches from Waterford City RFC, Na Gaeil GAA Club, Dunhill GAA Club, St. Saviours Boxing Club, De la Salle GAA Club, Waterpark RFC, Cricket Ireland, Na Laoch Dall Archery Club, KCK Athletic Club and Ballygunner GAA Club were all in attendance on the night.

Men on Target - Games for Older Men

Waterford Sports Partnership is delighted to be one of five counties selected to pilot this Go For Life men only programme. This three week programme involves a series of three target games called Lobbers (Boules), Scidil (Bowling) and Flisc (Frisbee).

Walk Waterford - Waterford Nature Park

Waterford Nature Park, Kilbarry, Waterford City’s newest Park was a hive of activity on National Trails Day last Sunday 7th October. There were strollers, cyclists, and people on scooters, joggers, rollerbladers and of course Waterford Sports Partnership’s Walk Waterford group.

Eighty Women on Wheels ladies cycle Sean Kelly Tour!

Waterford Sports Partnership has just finished running the ‘Women on Wheels Programme’ for the third year. The programme was funded by Get Ireland Active which enabled WSP to run two cycling programmes; a six week programme in Dungarvan and a seven week programme in Waterford City.

Go Fish

Waterford Sports Partnership ran a fishing programme for girls from Whitechurch N.S and Scoil Naomh Mhichil, Ballyduff Upper, ranging from 4th to 6th class. The programme was called Go Fish and it was run in conjunction with Blackwater Lodge Fishery, Ballyduff Upper. As part of the programme, the girls had to participate with an adult of their choice; be it their mother, father, sister, brother etc.

Fishing for All

Waterford Sports Partnership has just finished running a 5 week angling and biodiversity programme for the students of St Josephs Special School in Waterford. The programme was funded by the HSE and supported by Inland Fisheries Ireland. This 5 week programme was designed and delivered by coaching staff from the Angling Council of Ireland and St. Pauls Youth Fishing Club.

County Women on Wheels up and running

30 enthusiastic ladies took part in the County Women on Wheels Workshop at St. Augustine's College on Saturday 21st July. Ciaran Power and Comeragh Cycling club hosted another successful morning of theory, cycling skill drills and an enjoyable spin around the surrounding area.

Golf for Adults with a Disability

Waterford Sports Partnership has just finished running an 8 week Golf Programme  for Adults with a Disability. The programme was tutored by Ian St John PGA Professional and funded by the Irish Sports Council. Five participants attended the golfing skills programme in Tramore Driving range and Williamstown Golf Course. The aim of the programme was to teach adults with a disability some of the basic and more advanced skills needed to play golf.

Development Fund receipients - Tried & Tested Triathlon Club

In 2011 under its Coaching and Development Funds, Waterford Sports Partnership allocated 10,580 euro to 28 separate clubs and organisations.The Coaching & Development Funds are open to all sports clubs in Waterford. The maximum allocation is 250 euro for the coaching fund and 300 euro for the Development Fund.

Women on Wheels up and running in Waterford City

On Saturday 14th of July, Waterford Sports Partnership hosted the 2012 Women on Wheels Programme at the Regional Sports Centre. The Programme is for women who are new to cycling and or who cycled before and want to get back on the bike again. The ultimate aim is that by the end of this seven week programme the participants will feel ready to take part in this year’s Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford.

Men Only Training

Waterford Sports Partnership secured funding from the HSE to run a programme which offered exercise opportunities to males over 35 who hadn’t been actively involved in sport for a while. The Men Only Training (MOT) programme was run by Waterford Sports Partnership in conjunction with local clubs and facilities in the Dungarvan area. The specific aim of the programme was to increase the activity levels of the participants and to inform them about the various activities on offer in their own locality.

Surfing for Young People

Waterford Sports Partnership in association with T- Bay Surf Centre hosted a certified four week Surfing Programme for young people aged 14-16 years. Participants on the Programme were from; Manor St. John Youth Project, St. Paul’s School Completion and Inner City Youth Project.

Waterford Boccia Blitz

The interest surrounding Boccia continues to grow in Waterford with 53 participants taking part in Waterford Sports Partnership’s most recent Boccia blitz which was held in Cill Barra Sports Centre on Wednesday 13th June. The participants came from five organisations in Waterford which included Carriglea Cairde Services, St. Otterans Hospital, Rehabcare, Brother’s of Charity and the Irish Wheelchair Association.

Sports Club Participation Grant

Waterford Sports Partnership identified the need to assist already established clubs in increasing their membership and providing physical activity opportunities in the three key target areas of youth, over 35s and disability. The Sports Club Participation Grant was advertised recently with a maximum club allocation of €400 from a total fund of €2000.

On a warm and sunny Friday evening, the annual Pat Doyle Memorial Street Soccer Blitz took place at the Williamstown all weather pitches. Teams from Avondale, Crystal Court, Richardsons Meadow and Grace Dieu took part in U10, U12 and U14 age groups.

President opens Waterford Nature Park

Waterford Sports Partnership was delighted to be involved with in the official opening of the New Waterford Nature Park on Friday 1st of June last. This fantastic new 50 acre Nature Park at Kilbarry was officially opened by President Michael D. Higgins and local people were out in force on the day to enjoy the new facility.

Active Leadership Training - NOW BOOKING!

NOW BOOKING Active Leadership Training Course
Friday 22nd June from 6 to 9pm and Saturday 23rd June from 9.30am to 5pm
Cill Barra Sports Centre, Waterford

Active Leadership is an Irish Sports Council certified course which aims to develop the leadership skills of youth group leaders and sports club coaches. The course is a 10 hour practical course which takes place over 2 days and assists participants in applying knowledge gained in planning and organising safe and enjoyable physical activity sessions.
This course would be perfect for young or novice coaches, youth/community group leaders and summer camp leaders who are looking for further ideas and assistance on their communication skills for delivery of enjoyable physical activity sessions.

Training Spins for the Sean Kelly Tour

Waterfrord Sports Partnership in conjunction with local cycling clubs are running  The Sean Kelly Tour (SKT) Training Spins. There will be six organised training spins of increasing distance across Waterford City and County which are open to anyone over 16 - the first spin (30km) is on Sunday June 10th.

Mercyhurst Students try out hurling

Waterford Sports Partnership in conjunction with Dungarvan GAA Club delivered a hurling taster session to ten of the visiting Mercyhurst students.

Dungarvan Town Council is currently reviewing the use of Dungarvan Sports Centre. Their objective is to increase participation in sport in West Waterford and to improve the performance of our sports people.

Sports Club Participation Grant 2012

This small scale grant scheme aims to increase participation and exercise opportunities for Youth, Disability and those aged over 35 years, whilst also increasing club membership. The grant scheme is open to clubs who are either affiliated to an Irish Sports Council recognised National Governing Body e.g. GAA, FAI etc. or a recognised Disability Organisation. While the scheme is small scale (with a maximum allocation of 400 euro per club) this grant could make a big impact on the prolonged exercise opportunities for those in the identified target groups.

PAN Disability Soccer

Waterford Sports Partnership is delighted to be involved in developing Waterford's first PAN Disability Football for All Club in association with the FAI (Gary Power, Sports Development Officer) and Tramore AFC. The PAN Club was set up to cater for boys and girls between the ages of 6 to 16 years with all types of disabilities.

Walk Waterford - Spring Series

Next Walk Sunday 25th March
Waterford Sports Partnership was delighted to see so many families out at the last Walk Waterford Spring series stroll on the Dungarvan Railway walkway.Fifty walkers enjoyed the 5km Sunday stroll. Some of walkers knew a little of the history of the old railway and shared their knowledge along the way which made the walk all the more enjoyable.
